Dogs
Video walkthrough: Watch on Loom (link coming soon)
Dogs is the heart of BreederBuddy — your complete record for every dog in your program. Whether it’s an active breeding dog, a puppy, or a dog you’ve retired, every profile lives here with everything attached to it in one place.
What You Can Do Here
- Add and manage individual dog profiles with photos, breed, color, registration numbers, and microchip
- Import OFA health certificates by uploading a PDF — BreederBuddy reads the test, result, cert number, and dates automatically
- Track health tests, weight history, heat cycles, and titles
- Record genetics and view a full pedigree going back multiple generations
- Invite other breeders as co-owners of a specific dog
- Import sire, dam, or any dog from an external registry to fill in pedigree records quickly
- Attach documents, log events, and track expenses tied to a specific dog
- Share a dog’s public profile, gallery, or health information with buyers or co-owners
How It Works
Adding a Dog
- Go to Dogs in the left menu.
- Click Add Dog in the top right.
- Fill in the basic info: name, call name, date of birth, sex, breed, color, and registration numbers.
- Hit Save. The dog now appears in your list.
Importing a Dog from an External Registry
If you want to add a sire, dam, or any external dog and don’t want to type everything by hand:- From the Add Dog screen, click Import from Registry.
- Search by name or registration number.
- Review the data BreederBuddy pulled in — pedigree, health tests, and known traits — then save.
Viewing a Dog’s Profile
Each dog has its own detail page with tabs grouped along the side:- Profile — Details, Titles & Achievements
- Care & Evaluation — Health, Certifications (OFA & health testing), Weight, Aptitude & Neonatal records (if applicable), Heat Cycles (females only)
- Breeding & Lineage — Relationships, Genetics, Pedigree
- Media & Files — Gallery, Attachments
- Records & Operations — Events, Finances, Documents
Health Certifications (OFA & More)
The Certifications tab is where you store OFA, PennHIP, Embark, and other health-testing records. The fastest way to add one is to upload the PDF — BreederBuddy reads it and fills in the test type, result, cert number, and dates for you. See the Health Certifications doc for the full walkthrough.Co-ownership Invites
If another breeder co-owns a dog with you, you can give them full access to that dog’s record:- Open the dog’s profile.
- Click Invite Co-owner.
- Enter the other breeder’s email and (optionally) their kennel name.
- They’ll get an invite — once they accept, they can view and edit everything for that dog.
Generating AKC Paperwork
When it’s time to register a dog or litter with the AKC, head to Document Manager in the left menu. You can generate pre-filled AKC Ownership Records and Litter Records, drag fields around if needed, and download the PDF. See Document Manager.Custom Registration Labels
If you work with multiple registries (AKC, UKC, CKC, etc.), you can customize what each registration field is called for your whole organization in Settings → Preferences. Your custom labels show up everywhere on dog profiles, contracts, and forms.Spay/Neuter Estimate
If you sell puppies on a spay/neuter contract, BreederBuddy can show an estimated spay/neuter date on the puppy’s profile and on the buyer portal. Turn it on (and set the recommended age in months) in Settings → Preferences.Archiving a Dog
When a dog leaves your program (sold, placed, retired), you can archive them instead of deleting them. Archived dogs don’t clutter your active list but all their records are preserved.- Open the dog’s profile.
- Click the Archive option from the menu.
- BreederBuddy will ask if the dog went to a new home — you can link them to a buyer contact.
Sharing a Dog’s Profile
You can generate a shareable public link for a dog’s profile, gallery, health records, or genetics — useful for sending to potential buyers or co-owners.- Open the dog’s profile.
- Click the Share button.
- Choose what to include (profile, gallery, health, genetics).
- Copy the link and send it.

Tips & Common Questions
Can I add dogs that I don't own, like sires or dams from other programs?
Can I add dogs that I don't own, like sires or dams from other programs?
Yes — you can add external or “network” profiles for dogs you didn’t breed yourself. Use Import from Registry to pull them in with health and pedigree data, or add them manually.
What's the difference between Gallery and Attachments?
What's the difference between Gallery and Attachments?
Gallery is for photos and media you want displayed visually. Attachments is for documents and files like health certs, registration papers, or scanned records. The Certifications tab is the better home for OFA and health test PDFs since it parses the data for you.
Will deleting a dog remove it from my litter records?
Will deleting a dog remove it from my litter records?
Archive instead of delete whenever possible. Archiving keeps all the history intact. Deleting a dog is permanent and will remove them from associated records.
Can I tag dogs to organize them?
Can I tag dogs to organize them?
Yes — you can create custom tags and apply them to any dog. Then filter your dog list by tag to quickly find a group (e.g., “Guardian Homes”, “Available”, “Retired”).
What does a co-owner see?
What does a co-owner see?
A co-owner has the same access you do for the dog they share with you — profile, health, pedigree, breeding notes, finances. Co-ownership is per-dog, not for your whole program.
