Health Certifications
Video walkthrough: Watch on Loom (link coming soon)
Health Certifications is where you keep every health test result for every dog — OFA hips, elbows, eyes, cardiac, thyroid, PennHIP, Embark DNA, and anything else. The fastest way to add a record is to upload the OFA PDF and let BreederBuddy fill in the details for you. Color-coded badges make it obvious what’s valid, expiring, or expired.
What You Can Do Here
- Upload an OFA PDF and have the test type, result, cert number, and dates filled in automatically
- Add any health test manually — OFA, PennHIP, Embark, UC Davis, or your own custom tests
- See at a glance which certs are valid, expiring soon, or expired
- Group certs by category (orthopedic, eyes & cardiac, thyroid & dentition, DNA & genetics)
- Keep the original PDF attached as proof
- View the full history of every test type per dog
How It Works
Finding the Tab
- Open any dog’s profile.
- Under the Care & Evaluation group, click the Certifications tab (shield icon).
Importing an OFA PDF
- Click Import PDF and pick the OFA eCertificate file.
- BreederBuddy reads the PDF and fills in:
- Test type (Hips, Elbows, Eyes, Cardiac, Patellas, Thyroid, etc.)
- Result (Excellent, Good, Fair, Normal, Pass, etc.)
- OFA cert number
- Test date
- Expiry — Eyes/CAER auto-calculates 1 year from exam date; others you can set
- Issuing organization (auto-detected as OFA)
- Review what was parsed, fix anything that didn’t import cleanly, and save. The PDF is attached as proof.
Adding a Cert Manually
If you have a test that isn’t from OFA — Embark DNA, PennHIP, a vet’s letter — click Add Certification and fill in:- Issuing organization (OFA, PennHIP, Embark, UC Davis, etc.)
- Test name (pick from the list or type your own)
- Result or grade
- Cert number
- Date tested and expiry date
- Notes (any context worth keeping)
Reading the Badges
Each cert shows a status badge:- Green check — valid
- Yellow warning — expires within 30 days
- Red X — expired
Categories
Certs are grouped automatically:- Orthopedic — OFA Hips, Elbows, Patellas, PennHIP
- Eyes & Cardiac — OFA Eyes (CAER), OFA Cardiac
- Thyroid & Dentition — OFA Thyroid, OFA Dentition
- DNA & Genetics — Embark and similar panels
- Other — anything else, including custom tests

Tips & Common Questions
My OFA PDF didn't import perfectly — what do I do?
My OFA PDF didn't import perfectly — what do I do?
The parser handles most OFA eCertificates, but if a field is blank or wrong, just fix it before saving. The PDF is still attached so you have the source on file.
Which tests can BreederBuddy auto-parse from a PDF?
Which tests can BreederBuddy auto-parse from a PDF?
Most OFA tests — Hips, Elbows, Eyes (CAER), Cardiac, Patellas, Thyroid, Dentition, and a few others. PennHIP, Embark, and other providers don’t auto-parse yet, but you can add them manually.
Do health certs show up anywhere else?
Do health certs show up anywhere else?
Yes — they’re visible on the dog’s profile, can be shared via your dog’s public health page, and show on the buyer portal for puppies linked to that dog.
Will I get a reminder when a cert is about to expire?
Will I get a reminder when a cert is about to expire?
The badge turns yellow within 30 days of expiry and red after, so you can spot expiring certs by browsing the dog. Active expiration reminders are on our roadmap.
