Genetics
Video walkthrough: Watch on Loom (link coming soon)
Genetics is where you record and manage color genetics, coat traits, and health test results for your dogs. It gives you a clear picture of what each dog carries so you can make informed breeding decisions — and share that information confidently with buyers.
What You Can Do Here
- Record color genetics and trait results for each dog
- Log health test results (OFA, DNA panels, etc.) tied to a specific dog
- View a dog’s full genetics profile alongside their other records
- Share genetics information with buyers through a dog’s public share link
- Use the Genetics Forecast to anticipate possible outcomes from a planned breeding
How It Works
Viewing a Dog’s Genetics
- Open any dog’s profile from the Dogs page.
- Click the Genetics tab in the side menu.
- Here you’ll see all recorded genetics information: color loci, coat traits, and test results.
Adding Genetics Information
From the Genetics tab on a dog’s profile:- Click Edit or use the genetics entry fields.
- Enter color loci results (e.g., B locus, E locus, D locus) as you know them from DNA panels.
- Add health test results with the testing organization, result, and date.
- Save — the information is stored on the dog’s permanent record.
Genetics Forecast
The Genetics Forecast tool lets you select two dogs (a potential sire and dam) and see a breakdown of possible genetic outcomes for their offspring.- Go to Genetics → Forecast in the left menu.
- Select a sire and dam.
- Review the predicted outcome percentages for color and trait combinations.
Key Terms
| Term | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Locus (plural: Loci) | A specific gene location that determines a color or trait (e.g., B locus controls brown/black) |
| DNA Panel | A lab test that identifies what alleles a dog carries at various gene locations |
| OFA | Orthopedic Foundation for Animals — a common health testing registry |
| Carrier | A dog that carries a gene but doesn’t express it visually; can still pass it to offspring |
Tips & Common Questions
Do I need to enter every locus?
Do I need to enter every locus?
No — enter what you have. BreederBuddy treats unknown loci as unknown in the forecast, so partial data still gives you useful information.
Can buyers see a dog's genetics?
Can buyers see a dog's genetics?
Yes — when you share a dog’s profile link, you can choose to include genetics in the sharing scope.
Where do I find the results for my dog's DNA panel?
Where do I find the results for my dog's DNA panel?
Results come directly from the testing lab (e.g., Embark, Wisdom Panel, UC Davis). Enter the alleles they report for each locus into the dog’s Genetics tab.
